Dunk Island Resort
DUNK ISLAND RESORT, CLIENT: GPT, APRIL
2006 TO SEPTEMBER 2006
Dunk Island Resort was in the direct path of the
Category 5, Cyclone Larry before it crossed the
coast in March 2006 causing further devastation
to crops and buildings.
The impact of ‘Larry’ on the popular
island, which is a National Park and a haven for
tourists wishing to visit the Great Barrier Reef,
was so extensive that both the resort and National
Park were closed to visitors.
Ri-con replaced several buildings which were
ruined by the storm surge accompanying the cyclone
with new purpose built structures. Most of the
existing roofing on the island was also replaced.
Our expertise in remote and difficult locations
was utilised to remove the damaged buildings and
rebuild the resort to full operation within the
clients restricted time frame and the inclement
weather which followed ‘Larry’.
Many of the damaged interior fittings and furniture
had to be replaced. We were able to successfully
source new materials from Australia and around
the world in record time to get the popular Resort
back in operation.
The restoration of Dunk Island involved more
than 350 personnel over a period of 25 weeks.
