Training and Development
In line with the Government’s
Closing the Gap initiative, Ri-con Contractors
is working towards creating a program for the
training and development of indigenous residents
of the communities within which the company works.
The idea for this initiative grew as a result
of the successful employment and training of Indigenous
labour during the Home Valley Project. During
this project Ri-con employed Indigenous trainees
for the Indigenous Land Corporation (the Client).
Training was provided during the building period
and the result was trained staff at completion
of the project. The trainees received practical
experience in formwork, fixing reinforcement,
concreting, erecting steel wall frames and trusses,
wall cladding and roofing.
Ri-con has worked extensively across Northern
Australia and has made the decision to develop
the skills of members of the local Indigenous
communities. Such a program would begin with training
in basic work skills and continue into the specific
skills required for employment with the Company.
Community members will be able to maintain the
buildings after the construction period. This
will involve Ri-con working with State training
organisations to develop training and employment
programs in building and construction, plant operation,
and administration for the Indigenous communities
within which Ri-con works.
Ri-con will provide local people with the opportunity
to experience different occupations and decide
on where they would like to concentrate their
efforts.
Successful participants in these programs could
go on to apprenticeships within the Company, business
management training with local training and education
institutions, etc.
Successful completion of the training will lead
to business development opportunities for Indigenous
businesses in maintenance, plant operation, procurement
and training.
